Lara Krieger is a Los Angeles-based appellate lawyer with 20 years of experience grounded in California and New York state and federal courts. And through her appellate practice, she’s handled appeals in state and federal courts across the country. Her federal appellate practice includes not only handling appeals in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and other Circuits, but also in the United States Supreme Court. Lara has been certified by the State Bar of California as a specialist in Appellate Law.

After honing her litigation craft in New York, she switched gears to pursue appellate practice. She cut her teeth in appellate law during her four years as research attorney for the Ninth Circuit, before joining some of the finest law firms in California. She’s represented clients such as Hitachi, Sutter Health, and Rodale Publishing in high-stakes litigation.

Lara’s practice focuses on four areas: appeals and writs, complex motion practice, pre-litigation counseling, and appellate mediation:

  • Lara’s appellate practice emphasizes direct appeals from business litigation raising nuanced legal questions, such as California’s anti-SLAPP statute, breach of fiduciary duty, and unfair competition. Similarly, her extensive experience with writs in California state courts is invaluable to clients seeking quicker appellate review of case-dispositive issues like discovery disputes or statutes of limitation.
  • Lara’s strong writing and analytical skills come into play long before any appeal or writ petition is filed: She assists trial counsel by drafting persuasive motions and briefs, especially opening and opposing briefs on dispositive motions, motions in limine, dispositive motions during trial, post-trial motions, jury instructions, and verdict forms.
  • Lara’s appellate perspective is also an invaluable resource when it comes to advising trial counsel and their clients at the outset of a litigation. By seeking counseling early in the lifespan of a litigation, Lara can advise on the viability of the proposed causes of action, defenses, and similar threshold—and possibly dispositve—legal issues.
  • Lara also uses her mediation training and intimate knowledge of the appellate process to mediate appeals.
