Los Angeles Appellate Lawyer

Lara is an accomplished appellate lawyer, with deep experience in state and federal appellate and trial court practice. She has been certified by the State Bar of California as a specialist in Appellate Law. For almost 20 years, she’s handled appeals, writs, and complex motions for some of the most prominent law firms in California and New York. She now practices at the Law Office of Lara M. Krieger, based in the Century City area of Los Angeles.

In addition to her experience as an advocate, Lara knows the federal appellate courts from the inside out. For four years, she was a staff attorney in the Civil Research Unit of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit’s Staff Attorney’s Office in San Francisco.

Lara’s practice is truly national: She is admitted to practice in California, Hawaii, and New York, as well as the United States Supreme Court and many federal appellate courts. She has successfully handled appeals in California and the U.S. Courts of Appeal for the Third, Ninth, Eleventh, and Federal Circuits, as well as cases in California and New York trial courts and federal district courts. She recently filed an amicus curiae brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in an important copyright action.

Since 2005, she’s written articles for the Los Angeles Daily Journal about civil and appellate practice.  Her articles have covered issues ranging from the federal class action statute, to collecting attorneys’ fees, to the legality of internet discounts on healthcare.

Lara actively gives back to the legal profession and the community through her bar activities. She recently completed her term as the chair of the State Bar of California’s Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation (commonly known as the JNE Commission).  The Commission is the statutory entity charged with evaluating all judicial candidates before appointment to the California state courts by the Governor. Lara joined the Commission in 2010, served as its vice chair in 2012, before being appointed its chair. In this capacity, she’s participated in panels and workshops up and down the state, alongside sitting trial judges and appellate justices about California’s judicial appointment process.

Lara is also a longtime member of the Board of Governors of California Women Lawyers, and is currently serving as a Governor at Large. CWL recognized her as a “2011-2012 Woman of Distinction.”  She is an active member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, where she is a member of its Appellate Courts Section and Amicus Briefs Committee.

Lara recently passed the State Bar of California’s Legal Specialist Examination in Appellate Civil Law.

Lara earned her B.A. degree in Art History from Columbia University, where she graduated magna cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She earned her J.D. degree from Yale Law School.
